Gunalan lives with his wife and five children. He had an accident five years ago which caused bone fractures in his leg. Even though he has fully recovered, his leg is not as strong as before and he often experiences pain. This makes him unfit to work. He is glad to receive financial aid from Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat. His wife works as a cleaner.
